'Not on the cheap' | What chance of Palace selling Mateta?

Arroyo pleased with January signings

Aston Villa Women head coach Natalia Arroyo could hand two club WSL debuts to January arrivals Oriane Jean-Francois and Jenna Nishwonger against Man Utd this weekend, live on Your Site.

Jean-Francois joined on a club record deal from Chelsea, while Nishwonger has made a loan move from Arsenal where she was struggling for game time.

In an exclusive interview with Your Site, Arroyo said: "We were following Jenna for quite a long time. We need a left-footed player that could help us both in attack and defence and having more depth in our squad, so this specific defender dominating the left foot was important for us.

"The fact that she maybe needed us as well as a platform, that was a good combination to give her the trust again and give her a good environment to shine again.

"We were seeing her shining at the beginning when she arrived at Arsenal and before at Gotham, so we are expecting her to, with a bit of time until she gets back to be 100 per cent and feeling really with the rhythm, she can help us.

"It's having more options to have this high-intensity football that we are asking of our wing-backs, so that's part of what we want from Jenna.

"With Oriane, it's the same intention - bringing some depth to the squad, bringing some physicality. It's a very pure defensive profile but with really good qualities in possession, so she can do both.

"She can help us to give balance, she can help us to be consistent, to win duels. We are bringing the game sometimes to these physical battles, so we want our players in the central channel to be strong and she's a very good profile.

"She played an amazing Euros and again, we were following her and it was the opportunity to have her in the squad. We are expecting her to bring her quality, bring her ambition and help us to be stronger as a team."

Palace value wantaway Mateta at around 35m

Latest from Your Site News' Kaveh Solhekol and James Savundra:

Jean-Philippe Mateta wants to 100 per cent leave Crystal Palace.

The striker has wanted to leave since last summer when multiple clubs tried to sign him and he did not agree a new contract with Palace.

Juventus and Aston Villa have looked at signing him this month but Juve trying to sign him for an initial loan fee of just 1.7m (2m) was a total non-runner.

Palace executive chairman Steve Parish is a notoriously tough negotiator and he has always been reluctant to let any players leave on the cheap.

Palace still value Mateta at around 35m even though he will be 29 in June and out of contract in the summer of 2027.

Celta Vigo submit offer for Lopez

Latest from Your Site News' Lyall Thomas:

Celta Vigo have submitted a formal offer to loan Fer Lopez from Wolves for the rest of the season.

The offer includes a fee and covers all of the attacking-midfielder's salary.

Lopez and Wolves want him to get more minutes and there is no option to buy him in the offer.

Wolves have also been open to offers to loan him into the Championship this month.

Explained: Why Mateta wants to leave Palace

 Your Site News Kaveh Solhekol:

Mateta has 18 months left on his contract and just because he wants to leave Crystal Palace, it doesn't mean they are going to sell him. There is no way whatsoever they will let him leave on the cheap.

Talks were held last summer about him extending his contract. Those talks did not end with an agreement. We've known for a long time that he may leave Palace, but only at the right price.

But what is significant today is that he's let it be known that he does actually want to leave. Before today, behind the scenes, we were all aware that he was looking for a move elsewhere. But today is the first time that he's been happy for it to be out there in public.

So, what has changed? The transfer window is only open until February 2nd. He has got in the France squad. He wants to play for a club who are in the Champions League or a club who are going to be in the Champions League next season. He knows that clubs like Juventus and Aston Villa are interested in signing him.

But Crystal Palace will not let him leave on the cheap. So a club like Juventus, thinking that they can offer a 2m loan fee to get their leading striker, are totally wasting their time.

It probably needs to be a 35-40m fee. I know last summer clubs were interested in signing him. He was on the shortlist of Newcastle.

Tottenham made a very, very late bid to try and sign him before they signed Randal Kolo Muani on loan. I believe the figure that Tottenham were quoted was around 40m.

I think a lot of clubs will look at that and say it is too much for a player who is going to be 29 in June. He is not going to have that much resale value.
